The McCullough Peaks Herd Management Area lies east of Cody, WY. The badlands around the Peaks are part of a Wilderness Study Area managed by the Bureau of Land Management Cody Field Office and part of the Herd Management Area. The horses are a mix of paints, grays, buckskins, palominos, blacks and bays. Genetic analysis shows some Spanish influence, as well as evidence of draft horse origin. Long-time observers have also seen evidence of Thoroughbred and Morgan bloodlines in some of the horses. The best source on the history and wild horses at McCullough Peaks is Facts and Legends: Behind the McCulloch Peaks Mustangs (2012) by Phyllis Preator.
